Molly Martin Album Release w/Tommy and the Whale & Cale Tyson
Despite the plasticity and trashy Spring Break-iness of a lot of contemporary country come-ons, there is, in fact, an enduring tradition of earthy, smoldering country sensuality. I don’t know if Molly Martin wrote “Lay Me Down” as an answer song to Conway Twitty’s “I’d Love to Lay You Down” — probably not, I’m guessing. Still, in the spirit of Twitty’s bedroom classic, Martin’s lyrics don’t beat around the bush, and her humid timbre and supple phrasing ensure that they hit their mark in good time. Martin, a Mississippi-bred singer-songwriter, was apparently a reluctant recording artist and Kickstarter user. Now that she’s cleared both hurdles, she has Somewhere Between to show for it — a country-folk debut album with languid, swampy, emotionally forthright undertow.
