Fletcher C. Johnson w/Growing Pains & Fox Fun
In the dog days of summer, we could use a reminder that the thing you’re supposed to do to music is “play.” This bill delivers what the doctor ordered via a heap of sweaty, grass-stained pop ’n’ roll, starting with local young guns Fox Fun. They’re ostensibly a duo with high school buddies Ben Parks on the skins and Asher Horton on the strings, but lately we’ve seen guitar man Reid Magette and bassist Mac Joseph lending a hand. Detroit quartet Growwing Pains, in the process of releasing their debut LP, cool it down just a little with their nervy garage groove, before rocker Fletcher C. Johnson, late of King Tuff’s band, drops the party back into high gear. Combining the sounds of his multiple home bases in L.A. and Brooklyn, Johnson’s sunny tunes shine with Brill Building polish after a thorough sanding with Rust Belt grit. The only thing missing from this hang: Who’s got my homemade ice cream?
