Ronnie Milsap w/Kier Irmiter

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

So many entertainers continue kicking ass into their twilight years that it wouldn’t be accurate to say we’re surprised Ronnie Milsap is touring at age 70. The title of his most recent release, 2011’s Country Again, refers to the title track, a song that imagines Doc Brown’s country cousin learning that old-school country music is alive and well in the future. As if to ensure this prophecy comes to pass, the record contains its share of boot-scootin’ barn burners and sad, slow honky-tonk numbers — standouts include “Trapped in an Old Country Song,” co-written by the late Jack Clement, and “Even Fools Get Lucky,” co-written by Robert Ellis Orrall, better known in some circles as father to Jake and Jamin of JEFF the Brotherhood. But Milsap showcases his persistent versatility with funky boogies informed by his years as a Memphis studio player under Chips Moman, and even “If You Don’t Want Me To (The Freeze),” a soft-rocker turned Cajun line-dance anthem by swamp-pop hero Van Broussard.
