Hands Down Eugene w/Matt Moody

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

Matt Moody — or the mystical, long-bearded Wizard of the East, as we like to call him around these parts — has honed his reputation over the past decade or two not only as an exceptional bass player and frequent sideman, but also as a songwriter with a knack for tuneful vocal melodies and rock ’n’ roll songs that fall somewhere between folk and psychedelic pop. Tonight he’ll release two new efforts, When I Get to the Fence and Your Sun, each of which features album art by Moody’s painterly wife Mandy Peitz Moody. Any opportunity to watch Moody play his lithe, rubbery bass lines while singing in his mellifluous tenor is worth the price of admission, but this show is particularly enticing for one reason: After Moody’s set, he’ll perform with his band Hands Down Eugene. The Southern psych rock of HDE landed in the Scene’s “Local Favorites” pile for years, but it’s been many moons since they played as a unit. Good, well-composed, well-played stuff that sounds like, I dunno, some cross between The dB’s, Tall Dwarfs and The Clean, but really laid-back and really, really smooth.
