Rising comic Hannibal Buress recently joked about how easy it is for anybody to get a parade permit in New Orleans. If the personal parade ever becomes the Saturday afternoon party of choice in Music City, we’re going to seriously look into booking Red Baraat, because just thinking about their blend of brass-band funk, swing and Punjabi and Eastern European wedding music gives us an uncontrollable urge to bust some moves. Sunny Jain conducts his eight-piece crew with the rhythm from a double-headed drum called the dhol, drawing together a sound that closely resembles a N’awlins second line, but with the other influences opening the door to even more complex rhythms and harmonies. They’ve performed all over the country, from their home base in New York to Bonnaroo and even the White House. Those of you who missed out on their visit to Exit/In in February, get on the good foot and prepare yourself for an epic dance party.
