Darin Gray w/William Tyler

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

From Spinal Tap’s Derek Smalls and his aluminum-foiled cucumber, to that graphic floating around the Web insinuating that low notes drive away groupies, the image of the bass player is long overdue for an overhaul. Enter Darin Gray, a master improviser who uses every inch of his upright and electric instruments to produce sounds that are, to say the least, outside the bass’s traditional domain. A prolific collaborator, Gray has found kindred spirits in Jim O’Rourke, Chris Corsano, Glenn Kotche, and many more. A loose output jack, the cavity between the bridge and body of the instrument, the spaces between the strings — are all just as fair game for mesmerizing musical expression as the fretboard in Gray’s hands. Though his most frequent partners are percussionists, tonight Gray joins Music City’s equally innovative guitar master and Stone Fox co-proprietor William Tyler for some sounds that you aren’t likely to have heard before, or hear again.
