New Orleans Suspects

Pop/Rock
Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

Whenever a featured artist calls for stellar sidemen, you can bet the creative fire will spread beyond the job at hand. Each member of New Orleans Suspects has his own impressive curriculum vitae: Reggie Scanlan played bass behind legendary pianists James Booker and Professor Longhair before his three-decade run with The Radiators; “Mean” Willie Green has kept the beat for The Neville Brothers since the 1980s; Jake Eckert accompanied The Dirty Dozen Brass Band on lead guitar; saxophonist Jeff Watkins led James Brown’s band for 12 years before taking the producer’s chair for Joss Stone. And despite having the fewest credits of the bunch, whiz kid C.R. Gruver still makes the cut handily with his James Booker and Art Neville keyboard stylings. When they came together for a series of live jams at the famed Maple Leaf club in 2011, the variety in their backgrounds produced a unique blend that was too good to let pass — decidedly New Orleans-spicy with a sharp blues-rock tinge. Covering ground from groovy standards like “All By Myself” and “Tipitina” to original Little Feat-esque boogies like “36 Cars,” the quintet has the prescription ready for your dance fever.
