Chet Atkins Tribute ShowCountry
There’s always much ado about music festivals in Nashville — those that are here, those that are coming here, those that have moved on or passed on. But the long-running Chet Fest — otherwise known as the Chet Atkins Appreciation Society Convention — is rarely on the radars of anyone other than a certain sophisticated, jazz-and-folk-loving strain of guitar aficionados. Which is a real shame, since the patented down-home-meets-uptown Atkins touch seeped into the water all across the musical landscape. Convention goers typically gather at the Sheraton for four days of annotated and instructional thumbpicking by the handful of musicians Atkins dubbed fellow Certified Guitar Players, like Jerry Reed, Steve Wariner and tons of others. The night before this year’s summit gets underway, a slew of Atkins-admiring guitarists are putting on the annual tribute show, with a lineup featuring bona fide C.G.P. John Knowles, Merle Travis’ son Thom Bresh, Ventures guitarist and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Nokie Edwards, harp guitar virtuoso Muriel Anderson, local phenom Ben Hall and plenty of others.
