Typhoon with Radiation City

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

Currently hovering at 11 members, this Portland, Ore., ensemble marries the literate acoustic drama of The Decemberists with the joyful release of The Polyphonic Spree. Frontman/bandleader Kyle Morton addresses his recurring health challenges (Lyme disease he contracted as a child among them) as if he were scripting a narrative or reading from a novel. Given Morton’s focus on his own mortality — his life expectancy appeared compromised when he gathered the band at an Oregon farm to record its latest album White Lighter — it’s no surprise that the music contains elements of life-affirming determination. But the rest of the band, essentially Morton’s group of friends, brings a sense of celebration to what Morton has described as the resentment and ambivalence that drives his music. In those contrasts, Typhoon hits the ambiguous emotional notes that define life, reflecting the constant stress of our finite existence.
