Ben Sollee w/Dessa

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

Two years ago, Louisville chamber-pop phenom and former Bela Fleck cohort Sollee was the sensation of what proved to be the last (for now) SoundLand, dazzling a Station Inn crowd with his elastic R&B grooves, elating enthusiasm and hell-for-leather intensity. Did we mention that his rock ’n’ roll weapon of choice is the cello? If that summons forth the hapless schnook in Woody Allen’s Take the Money and Run — the cello player in a marching band — rest assured that Sollee coaxes everything from tropical rhythms to delicate underscoring to rubber-band funk from his Hitchcock-shaped instrument, leaving listeners agog at its versatility (and his stamina). Here’s hoping he plays his dynamite cover of “The Obvious Child” off Paul Simon’s The Rhythm of the Saints, a torrid rhythmic workout that showcases string-thumping octopus Sollee’s dexterity. Dessa opens.
