Absinthe Junk, Freebase Masons, Opossum Holler & Funkhammer

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

It’s all well and good for a show to have a unifying theme that ties all the bands together, but a deviation from that formula doesn’t always spell disaster. This bill looks like the plate at our last barbecue — baked beans all in the coleslaw, potato salad creeping up on the tomatoes — but we like it that way. Kicking it off is “Toddzilla” Austin, bearer of the regal mohawk mullet and guitar slinger for larger-than-life funk troupe JonesWorld, with his new side project, Funkhammer. Next up is a set from Bowling Green psychobilly/speed-metal trio Opossum Holler, who get us a little misty-eyed by referring to our favorite Opryland roller coaster, The Screamin’ Delta Demon. Following them are Freebase Masons; we haven’t decided if they’re proggy doom or doomy prog, but their new album is almost here, and we’re primed and ready for a good dose of riffage pulling from the schools of Pentagram and Goblin. Local quartet Absinthe Junk, whose massive sound melds later-vintage prog and dark alterna-rock in the vein of Garbage, round it out.
