BITCH FEST night 1 feat. Cry Baby, Churchyard, Tipper Whore, & Scale Model
As the former drummer in a Kathleen Hanna-admiring riot grrrl rock band with a queer frontwoman, DIY patches and home-burned CDs, I’m a big fan of the Bitch Fest concept: three solid days of feral, in-your-face punk feminism. Or as the Bitch Fest Facebook profile puts it, “a showcase of some of the South’s most powerful and righteous femme-fueled bands.” That includes all-female Rage Against the Machine tribute Take the Power Back, trippy garage quartet ChurchYard, squalling guitar-drums duo Cry Baby, sludge-pop trio Thelma and the Sleaze, dance-punk outfit Tipper Whore (whose sense of camp would make the B-52s proud), and gloriously foul-mouthed and sexually explicit faux hillbillies Birdcloud, who protested YouTube’s censorship of their “cult of virginity” spoof “Saving Myself for Jesus” by inviting everybody and their grandma to post cover videos of the song. There’s plenty more smart, and smart-assed, subversion where that came from, plus ’zines, reps from feminist organizations and other tools a badass needs to fight the good fight in a state with a downright shameful record on matters of gender and sexuality.
