Duane Pitre w/Meadownoise

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

Plenty of music labeled “avant-garde” feels designed to be endured — a spectacle of form or process whose meaning is bound, for better or worse, to the intellectual contemplation it’s intended to provoke. Duane Pitre might at first appear to be a member of that camp: An alumnus of the post-hardcore group Camera Obscura (very different from the pop-infused Scots of the same name), Pitre peers deep into the pitches between the 12 notes of our traditional equal-tempered scale, stretching microtonal intervals into long drones that ring against each other, sometimes with the aid of a computer instead of a human ear. Without an obvious rhythmic pulse on his forthcoming record, Bridges, time slows down and becomes less important, and leaves audiences to contemplate the sound hanging in midair: a strange and beautiful magic that’s actually enjoyable. Sharing the stage is Matt Glassmeyer’s stellar Meadownoise, which brings a different outside-the-box approach to more traditional pop music formats with a host of specially modified instruments.
