The Dodos

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

San Franciscan psych-folk experimentalists The Dodos make mangled pop songs. That isn’t as grisly as it sounds. It just means they take conventional pop tropes — like tuneful melodies and up-tempo rhythms — and turn them on their heads, creating slyly beautiful if unlikely earworms. On The Dodos’ latest, August’s Carrier, frontman Meric Long tops briskly picked guitar parts with his honeyed tenor while drummer Logan Kroeber burns through frenzied and tightly played slabs of percussion. The result is songs like “Substance” and “Confidence” — songs that in spite of their quirky and disjointed arrangements, are exceptionally catchy and emotionally evocative. The Dodos have found themselves lumped in with other hip, Eastern-influenced indie bands in the past (like, say, Yeasayer), but for my money, these dudes are a cut above.
