Brass Band of Nashville Presents: Summertime BrassJazz
The Brass Band of Nashville has come a long way since 2008. The volunteer-driven ensemble was originally established as a British-style brass band to help preserve the 19th century tradition of musical competition for Middle Tennessee. While the Brass Band of Nashville has strayed from its initial competitive intentions, the lack of rigid instrumentation requirements has allowed the group and its repertoire to freely evolve. “Summertime Brass,” its second full-length concert of 2013, features an array of pieces that interpret travels across intertwining locales. Highlights will include the patriotic “Duty, Honor, Country,” a Harold Walters piece featuring narrative excerpts from Gen. MacArthur’s final speech at West Point, and Gershwin’s operatic aria “Summertime.” Wagner’s “Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral,” a selection from his 1850 opera Lohengrin, will feature guest Julia Callaway, Vine Street’s recently retired organist of 36 years.
