Robert Ellis w/Jon Byrd

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

Jon Byrd is an old hand at this singing and songwriting thing, and Robert Ellis is vastly skilled and accomplished for such a young gun. We could try to wrap all kinds of fancy metaphors around that, but it would be gilding the lily. You don’t have to listen to Ellis to tell he’s hungry for something — just glance at his ambitious tour itinerary for proof — but a spin through his sophomore album, Photographs, indicates that the time-honored craft of bringing stories to life is what drives him. While Ellis carries on traditions in country music that are so good you forget about all the cringe-worthy parts for a while, Byrd spent his years as a sideman honing skills that allow him to ignore genre definitions and just write great songs. His voice, somewhere between Willie Nelson and Gram Parsons, adapts with uncanny ease to soulful ballads, upbeat shuffles and just about anything else he can throw at it. And if you need a celebrity endorsement to really get behind him, see the 2012 benefit for Byrd at The Station Inn — it’s not just any ol’ guitar slinger who can get Marshall Chapman to play in his honor.
