Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

Some combinations that are messy by definition — gravy-soaked french fries topped with melted cheese, for example — can still come together smoothly if they’re prepared with a measured touch. Likewise, when electronic duo Archnemesis marries saxophone jazz licks and intricate ’70s funk with dubstep and hip-hop, it could easily result in a soggy mishmash that’s hard to digest. But Archnemesis co-founders Justin Aubuchon and Curt Heiny rein in dubstep’s inherent abrasiveness just enough, resulting in a sound that still has the thump to get people moving, but leaves plenty of room to weave other styles in and out. Though their sound is plenty bassy, Aubuchon and Heiny ensure that the full range of textures from their arsenal of samples shines through the percussive din — thus proving that it’s possible to be heavy without being heavy-handed.
