Aimee Mann w/Ted Leo

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

At least two distinct audiences follow Aimee Mann: ’80s babies who grew up with her as a first-generation MTV glamourpuss, and those who know her from her very funny guest shots on Portlandia and Tom Scharpling’s radio comedy phenomenon The Best Show on WFMU. In between are those who encountered her through the wistful but hard-edged songs she contributed to Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia — it’s safe to say she’s the only artist in all of cinema to be covered onscreen simultaneously by Jason Robards Jr., William H. Macy and Tom Cruise. (Lest anyone forget, she’s also fully present in The Big Lebowski — well, except for one toe.) Where all these audiences intersect is at Mann’s hugely entertaining live shows, showcases for her smoky voice, sneaky wit and insinuating songs. This time through, she’s not only playing some of her strongest recent material — from her crisp, harder-rocking 2012 album Charmer — but she’s joined by fellow Friend of Tom Ted Leo, minus his band The Pharmacists. They’ve been touring since spring as the duo #BOTH, and YouTube clips suggest they’re a perfect fit, musically, vocally and comedically. Tickets $49-$60.
