Missy Raines and The New Hip Album Release w/Ed Snodderly and Other Special Guests

Bluegrass
Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

Missy Raines is a beloved favorite at The Station Inn, so celebrating her latest release with her quartet at The Station Inn seems like a no-brainer. But New Frontier is no bluegrass collection. Ethan Ballinger rocks out convincingly on electric guitar, Josh Fox’s drumming is sensitive but muscular, and Jarrod Walker’s mandolin is as rhythmically contemporary as it is melodic. Raines herself has pared down her upright bass playing to thoughtful essentials, the better to focus on her husky vocals — in a departure from the past, there’s not a single instrumental track on the album. Across the board, the players and singers faithfully execute the durable “serve the song” motto. The songs themselves are a fine bunch, too, with multiple contributions from Zach Bevill (Farewell Drifters) and Raines’ onetime colleague Ed Snodderly, setting the pace in establishing the album’s wistful, even somber — but always delicious — tone.
