Blue Oyster Cult

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

A friend of mine once said, “Having two guitar players in a band is like polishing a turd.” I never asked him about three-guitar bands — for example, Blue Öyster Cult — but I can only imagine the vulgarity-laden analogy that would have spewed forth from his mouth. Of course, said friend is a bass player, so every word he utters is suspect. Furthermore, Blue Öyster Cult rocks, and their triple-ax attack still includes two original members: Donald Roeser (aka Buck Dharma) and Eric Bloom, who are also the band’s main singers. I could live without ever again hearing “Burnin’ for You,” but “Don’t Fear the Reaper” and “Godzilla” are two classic-rock radio staples that I never tire of (and the latter set the mold for Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” odd as that may seem). Of course, Roeser and Bloom are well into their 60s, so they may in fact be fearing the reaper, but they still know how to bring the rawk.
