Animal Collective

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

Electro-experimental art-rock stalwarts Animal Collective will have to turn in a Springsteen-worthy performance at Marathon Music Works tonight to live up to fan anticipation. The gig was first slated for March but canceled due to illness and rescheduled for July, then again canceled due to a subsequent illness, and rescheduled for tonight. It’s been a long wait, but if the (hopefully healthy) ensemble’s late-night rave-like electro-psych extravaganza at Bonnaroo back in June is any indication, it’ll be worth it. AC is still on the road promoting its abrasive, EDM-leaning ninth studio album Centipede Hz, a record the band’s sound manipulator Brian “Geologist” Weitz told the Scene in March was written for the stage. “For this one, we just wanted to feel like a balls-to-the-wall garage band ...” he said. “And that was pretty in response to the Merriweather [Post Pavilion, the band’s acclaimed, headier 2009 effort] sound feeling pretty played out to us.”
