The Fatty Acids w/MantraMantraMantra, Crayons and Antidotes & T. Rust
Is something in the air over southern Wisconsin inspiring a wave of noteworthy synth-laced rock? Milwaukee’s Fatty Acids aren’t alone in using distorted guitars, squirrelly synths, trumpets and danceable beats in their self-styled “scramble pop,” but the rebellious Clash snarl and unexpected dark patches that snake their way through the group’s two LPs stand out. Current single “Airsick” is an infectious, propulsive, cleverly arranged nugget that still feels spare and nervy despite its several layers. The Shine Brothers’ vintage psych freakout, going down simultaneously on the other side of Elliston, is a worthy contender, but this bill made the cut on merit of sheer uniqueness. Murfreesboro-born trio MantraMantraMantra continues pushing beyond Bucket City, bringing a curious Rush-meets-Battles vibe with them. Carrying on that theme, Crayons and Antidotes, a ’Boro unit with a revolving membership and shifting experimental takes on electronic pop, will also be along for the ride. Taylor Rust, post-punky surf-pop manipulator and sometime found-sound collagist, will open the show with a solo set.
