ZZ Top

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

Billy Gibbons, the slow fire-breathing guitarist for Texas blues-rock icons ZZ Top, loves Nashville. A few years ago he almost bought a condo in the Gulch. In late 2012 he caught up with pal Dan Auerbach at the latter’s Easy Eye Studio to jaw about shared passions for Lightnin’ Hopkins and vintage vinyl. And ZZ Top’s first album in nine years, La Futura, features co-writes with Music City’s Trey Bruce and Tom Hambridge, plus a cover of Gillian Welch and David Rawlings’ “It’s Too Easy.” La Futura actually tilts backwards, returning the band to the gritty roadhouse drawl of classic albums like 1975’s live Fandango! and 1976’s Tejas, when the trio’s pop hooks grew sharp and the drum machines of their smash Eliminator were seven years in la futura. That lends their current tour’s set lists plenty of high-order lowdown.
