Phantogram w/Giraffage

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

When Phantogram released their impressively coherent debut to the world in 2009, it didn’t sound like an album that was recorded in a barn. Like many of their contemporaries, the duo of Josh Carter and Sarah Barthel fitted hip-hop’s boom-bap chassis with airy vocals, shoegazey guitars and artful blippy-bloops. But Eyelid Movies had a verve and icy assurance that other records by likeminded knob-twiddlers lacked, and the band’s best-new-hotness trajectory seemed assured. Since then, they’ve acted a bit like a band holed up in the countryside — trickling out a few EPs that amount to, if not a sophomore slump, exactly, then somewhat less than the brilliant, sprawling follow-up fans have been waiting for. The new single “Black Out Days,” with serrated synths swooping around Barthel’s dramatic vocal, offers yet another enticing artifact of the band’s astute ear for rhythm and atmosphere.
