Paul Burch and the WPA Ballclub

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

A veteran of the honky-tonk renaissance that revived Lower Broadway two decades ago, Burch regrettably remains one of the city’s most underrated singer-songwriters, performers and bandleaders, whether he’s playing country swing with his WPA Ballclub, joining insurgent punk hillbillies The Waco Brothers for a joint project or dashing off an LP’s worth of lovingly rendered Buddy Holly covers. This could be his year, though: He’s got a new album, Fevers, due in November on the Plowboy label, and he even has a track on first lady Michelle Obama’s upcoming hip-hop-inspired album promoting her “Let’s Move!” campaign against childhood obesity. No word on whether the first lady intends to bust some rhymes with the WPA’s O.G., but we wouldn’t put anything past a guy capable of lines like, “She took off her dress and gave me the slip.”
