Band of Heathens

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

On a night dedicated to indulgence, gaudiness and poor decision-making, The Band of Heathens’ good-for-nothing, burned-out country romps will surely make a good companion. The Austin quartet relies on hoarse two-pack-habit sing-alongs, syrupy guitar twang and lyrics that could be straight from Gram Parsons’ notebook. Their take on Gillian Welch’s “Look at Miss Ohio” is particularly stirring, transforming the teary-eyed dirge into a drunken, bitter drag-out. While not the wildest thing blowing through town on All Hallow’s Eve, the group’s Waylon-via-The-Band country ramblings should serve as a nice backdrop to Halloween’s deviousness and debauchery.
