Everybody thought Laura Mvula would win the £20,000 Mercury Prize this year — including eventual winner James Blake. But as the old betting adage goes, “everybody” never wins. Still, Mvula was in fine company alongside the likes of David Bowie and Arctic Monkeys in the consolation bracket, and in any case her sublime and funky debut album Sing to the Moon was the prize the rest of us got in the deal. Soul, like punk, is as much an attitude as a set of particular sounds, and Mvula tethers everything from harps to looped vibes to a voice that can go from honey to gravel in the turn of a phrase, adorned with jazzy harmonies and delivered with a humble, loping grace that transports.
