Outback Concerts Presents

Greg Brown

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

Greg Brown’s oaken voice is a perfect reflection of his durability. The singer-songwriter from Iowa has been carving songs from his rural mystic’s perspective since the 1970s, but hit upon the perfect sonic complement to his potent brew of lyrics in the late ’80s when he began collaborating with producer/slide guitarist Bo Ramsey in the studio. A dozen albums later, the haunted, atmospheric Hymns to What Is Left brings a spare, edgy sensibility to the kind of numbers about love, destiny and challenge that turn other songwriters — including Lucinda Williams, T Bone Burnett and the late Bill Morrissey — into worshippers. On this local stop, the Prairie Home Companion regular plays a special seated concert, and he’ll likely whip out “Brand New Angel,” his tune performed by Jeff Bridges in the fussed-about 2009 film Crazy Heart.
