John Paul Keith w/Lylas & Sam T. Smith
It’s pure coincidence that I’m writing this John Paul Keith pick on a day that I’m also scheduled to interview his onetime V-Roys bandmate Scott Miller. That band was two decades and loads of music ago — back when Keith still called Knoxville home. He’s since swung through Nashville and set up shop in Memphis, which has proven a friendly environment for his solo albums. His latest, Memphis Circa 3AM, drives the point home with everything from its title to its credits — pivotal Sun Records guitarist Roland Janes produced it at Sam Phillips Recording Service — not to mention its sound. There are galloping grooves of rockabilly and honky-tonk provenance, crisp Southern power-pop smarts and — as expected from an artist with a retro fetish — an analog vibe. Thankfully, enjoying Keith’s music requires no particular geography.
