Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

If there’s any way for a young rapper to earn a spot in our hearts (and in our iPod rotation), it’s flipping a ’90s R&B classic and making it his own. And such it is with Phil Adé’s “Xscape,” named for the Jermaine Dupri proteges who were “Just Kickin’ It” all over the charts circa 1993. Adé manages to transform their “Who Can I Run To” into that rarest of beasts — a hip-hop love song that doesn’t make us cringe. Shit, most rappers won’t fuck with a love song, period — they’re too busy polishing their rented jewels and filling out car-rental forms for their videos. But the Maryland-based MC is a rare breed who exhibits more creativity than ego, and is intelligent where most MCs are marching towards obsolescence. Adé is joined by up-and-coming New Yorker Kid Daytona.
