Michael Martin Murphey

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

You may know him as the guy who wrote and sang the 1975 hit “Wildfire,” but there’s a lot more to Michael Martin Murphey. In the late ’90s he decided to focus on the American West and cowboy music, and his 1990 album Cowboy Songs became the first album of cowboy music to go gold since Marty Robbins’ Gunfighter Ballads in 1959. In fact, Murphey is the top-selling cowboy music artist in the world, and it’s a title he comes by honestly, since he is in fact a cowboy and owns a ranch. He’s a bit of an activist too, working to raise awareness of issues ranging from the plight of farmers to environmental conservation and the Native American rights movement. Murphey’s performance at Two Old Hippies is a benefit for the Fiona Rose Murphey Foundation Charitable Trust, which raises money for children with the congenital bone disorder osteogenesis imperfecta, the singer’s granddaughter among them.
