Dumpstaphunk

George Porter Jr.

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

Anyone tempted to dismiss New Orleans’ Dumpstaphunk based on the goofiness of the band’s name would do well to remember how gonzo the funk lexicon got during the genre’s heyday. See: Parliament Funkadelic and its galaxy’s worth of spin-offs. Dumpstaphunk draws arrangement ideas from the eccentric well of George Clinton and Bootsy Collins, and founding member Ivan Neville, who sings and plays keyboards, got his musical education the traditional New Orleans way: in the family. He apprenticed in the Neville Brothers alongside his dad, Aaron, and his uncles Art and Cyrille, of second-line-riffing funk pioneers The Meters, before launching his own band. Dumpstaphunk’s lineup presently features Ivan’s guitarist cousin Ian, badass ex-Beyoncé drummer Nikki Glaspie, and not one, but two bassists, Tony Hall and Nick Daniels III. Beware: The count rises to three when Flea jumps in for one track on their new horn-heated acid-funk album Dirty Word, and when Meters bassist George Porter Jr. joins them onstage.
