Hoots and Hellmouth w/Holy Ghost Tent Revival
This pairing wouldn’t have been nearly as interesting a couple years ago. Philadelphia’s Hoots and Hellmouth ramble eloquently down the backroads of Southern folk. They occasionally sprint like Mumford & Sons, but they more often settle into a relaxed groove, coloring it with surprising accents — twisted guitar à la Marc Ribot, eerie hums à la Bon Iver. North Carolina’s Holy Ghost Tent Revival would have once been an obvious complement for this rustic and eclectic troupe. Their first album exploded like early Avett Brothers with the potent addition of ragtime horns. The brass remains on last year’s Sweat Like the Old Days, but it’s deployed in service of rumbling blues and swaggering soul, an abrupt change that should prove a potent counterpoint to Hoots’ laid-back vibe.
