Moon Taxi w/Machines Are People Too & Case Bloom
Sure, Nashville quintet Moon Taxi played “Jingle Bells” in 5/4 time at a recent Christmas party, but as Scene contributors Jewly Hight and D. Patrick Rodgers have both pointed out within the past few months, this is a band now firmly entrenched in the art of “serving the song,” as the expression goes. Their latest album Mountains Beaches Cities isn’t entirely devoid of the intricate time signatures or jam-based wandering that initially attracted Moon Taxi’s members to one another, but their common mission appears to have shifted into high gear around a newfound hooks-or-high-water ethic. Believe it or not, the airwaves are full of popular tunes by artists who mastered the art of making complex music sound simple. Hopefully Moon Taxi won’t lose sight of complexity as it aims to connect going forward. The band is fresh off making its network television debut on the Late Show With David Letterman in November, so it’s only fitting they look back on an ascendant year before a hometown crowd on New Year’s Eve.
