Cass McCombs

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

Cass McCombs sticks to the shadows. He doesn’t dig publicity, and his songs burrow deep into Americana’s dark corners. But he doesn’t go there because he’s afraid of the world at large — he’s fascinated with the unheralded characters that give this country its great and grimy flavor. On this year’s sprawling Big Wheel and Others, McCombs embodies a boastful trucker, wayward lovers and an unrepentant killer — and he neither condemns nor celebrates these wandering souls. He presents them plainly, reveling in their natural complexity. “A man is bolts, a man is rust,” his trucker declares, “For a little while, then the man is dust.” He may be brutish, but this road warrior, like all of America’s weirdos, has poignant revelations, fleeting moments that McCombs captures better than almost anyone.
