St. Paul and the Broken Bones

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

Sure, top-notch Southern soul revival is nothing new, but does it ever get old? Certainly not if an ensemble’s got the goods to deliver — tight horns, a greasy rhythm section and a committed frontman with splitting pipes of gold. Fronted by fresh-faced, bowtie-sporting, bespectacled crooner Paul Janeway, Alabama trad-R&B outfit St. Paul and the Broken Bones handily excels in all such fields. Hailing from Birmingham, Ala., the band exists in musical homage to its neighboring Muscle Shoals. Fittingly, Janeway’s sky-scraping, raspy wail cuts through the speakers like Wilson Pickett peaking in the midnight hour. Pickett, Otis Redding, Sam Moore — Janeway channels ’em all with uncanny accuracy. And his voice is the last thing you might expect to hear coming out of a singer who looks like he could just as easily be your office IT guy. Currently, the band is signed to Civil Wars singer John Paul White’s recently launched indie label Single Lock Records.
