Geographer w/Royal Bangs

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

Fans of Geologist, the headlamp-adorned psychedelic knob-twiddler of Animal Collective fame, are bound to be disappointed when they misread tonight’s High Watt bill and plunk down a Hamilton, only to be greeted by the decidedly straightforward synth-pop of Geographer. Not that there’s anything wrong with straightforward synth-pop. The San Francisco trio is just about as indie-pop-du-jour as you can possible get these days — toying with electro vibes, dreamy guitars and drum machines that act as a vessel for balladeering on the 8-bit spectrum. On Myth, the band’s sophomore effort released last year, Geographer takes a few great leaps away from Postal Service comparisons by layering oscillating background vocals, fragmented melodies and spaced-out drones under singer Michael Deni’s falsetto. Maybe those Animal Collective fans won’t be so bummed after all.
