Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

The best things happen without effort, and that seems to be the story of Leagues. Not because the East Nashville rockers don’t work at their craft — they’re all accomplished musicians and scene vets. But there’s been a centripetal force at work ever since a series of coincidental meetings brought them together, and singer/guitarist Thad Cockrell was inspired enough to cast off his solo pursuits and throw in with his three mates. They’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback for their slinky atmospheric rock, which blends The Walkmen’s theatricality and Doves’ dreamy elegance. It’s a dramatic and stylistic switch for Cockrell, a preacher’s kid whose prior efforts included an album of duets with Whiskeytown’s Caitlin Cary and several discs of spare gospel-tinged country. Cockrell’s lithe, heartfelt tenor evokes the U.K. strain of blue-eyed soul and rock first popularized by Robert Palmer on Leagues’ January debut, You Belong Here. This show was originally scheduled for early October, but was canceled at the last minute. Here’s hoping this show date sticks
