Buffalo Clover Album Release w/Patrick Sweany, Kansas Bible Company & Tennessee Jet
Norway isn’t the first place we think of when it comes to talented soul singers, but we’ll have to revise our assessment (i.e. expand our thinking beyond Eurovision and Ylvis) after watching Jarle Bernhoft tear it up on the new Arsenio Hall Show. One-man bands that use loop pedals to transform a solo acoustic guitar performance into an electro-pop symphony are nothing new, but few of them have Bernhoft’s vocal chops and ingenuity — or his devotion to Prince, for that matter. Judging the book by its cover, Brooklyn quintet Miracles of Modern Science and their gimmicky concept of a chamber ensemble playing dance-friendly indie rock seem tailor-made to turn us off. But their willingness to play with unusual sounds and techniques on their sophomore EP MEEMS hints at an experimental side, inspiring us to give them the benefit of the doubt.
