Lupe Fiasco w/Stalley & The Boy Illinois
“Hello evil, I’m back,” Lupe Fiasco declares after his first few verses on Food & Liquor II, the 2012 sequel to his 2006 breakthrough. It’s a pretentious thought — like many of the things that escape Fiasco’s lips — but he raps with incredible conviction, and rest assured that when he pits himself against evil, he really means it. On “Around My Way (Freedom Ain’t Free),” he impugns FEMA, Web culture and modern racism, connecting disparate issues over jubilant drum loops with a flow that rumbles crisply, like whitewater sliding down rapids. “To me, the truth is more fulfilling than a meth hit / Or finding really fast Internet to have some sex with,” he spits. His songs concern big issues — truth, freedom, etc. — but rarely at the expense of having a good time.
