Still There: A Tribute to The Band and their Last Waltz

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

We’re down the road a piece from 1978, when Martin Scorsese released The Last Waltz, his film of The Band’s 1976 farewell concert. Much had happened in the interim after Scorsese caught The Band and their guests on stage in San Francisco: punk, disco and fragmentation of the audience that took comfort from the group’s early work. These days, you’re probably aware of the resurgence of the country-rock that punk and disco supposedly erased, and tonight’s show features a brace of roots-rockers — among them Buffalo Clover, Allen Thompson and Kim Logan — who will perform The Band’s songs. I think The Band’s greatness is a matter of both songwriting and musicianship — no other rock band so effectively combined technical proficiency with free-wheeling attitude. Also paying tribute to The Last Waltz will be Shane Tutmarc, Lilly Hiatt, Rich Mahan and Taylor Brashears.
