Cory Branan

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

Mutt, the title of Cory Branan’s most recent LP, is an apt label for his mixed-breed folk rock. On songs like “Darken My Door,” which wanders eloquently down desert backroads fleshed out by earnest pedal steel, he sounds like Will Oldham fronting Reckless Kelly, managing a strange mix of thorny singing and steadfast rock ’n’ roll swagger. On “Survivor Blues,” he’s rolling down the same E Streets as Lucero, hurling his gravelly belt at lines about a ride “that’s plenty car enough to never come back.” Branan’s unlikely strength is binding these disparate ideas with unflagging passion and a consistently sharp wit. These techniques may not be his alone, but he plays them with too much conviction to ever sound ordinary.
