Junior Sisk and Ramblers Choice

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

Fresh from capturing his first IBMA Male Vocalist of the Year award, Junior Sisk rolls into town with a new mandolin player, Johnathan Dillon, embedded in a tightly knit band Rambler’s Choice that’s deeply familiar with every traditional bluegrass trope there is — and more than capable of making up some new ones, too. Banjo player Jason Davis, especially, is on fire these days, with a new solo album of his own that shows a rare degree of sensitivity for such a muscular player. But while he and all the boys in the band can bring it with distinction — fiddler Billy Hawks has been there from the beginning, and bassist Jason Tomlin’s a sparkler live — center stage belongs to Sisk and his fine, mournful mountain voice. Yes, you’ll hear echoes of favorite singers like Carter Stanley and Keith Whitley, but they serve mostly to place Sisk’s singing in an historical context. When he sings, buddy, you’ll know it’s him.
