Shawn Camp and Friends

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

Over nearly three decades in the business, Shawn Camp has made quite a few noteworthy acquaintances, and the roster of potential bandmates for an “And Friends” gig reads like a who’s-who guide to country and bluegrass music. Camp was on his way to a promising career as a singer when an artistic disagreement led his label to shelve his sophomore record; his instincts proved right when the album, released with enthusiastic endorsement 15 years later, sounds timeless compared with some of its contemporaries. In the meantime, Camp plied his trade as an ace writer and session player, penning hits for artists like Garth Brooks and Randy Travis, co-writing with luminaries like Guy Clark, and frequently appearing on albums by Clark, John Prine and others. Maybe we can’t erase Camp’s credit on the Jimmy Buffett-Toby Keith ditty “Too Drunk to Karaoke” from history, but we’ll go ahead and let it slide in light of his other accomplishments.
