Marquee Mayfield w/Sidewalk Chalk & The Grips
Thanks in part to Daft Punk’s exquisite and heartfelt love letter to dance music, Random Access Memories, 2013 has been a year for focusing on the good parts of disco — more about grooving to a blend of uptempo funk with R&B/pop production, and less about the dangers of decadent escapism. Local singer Marquee Mayfield cooked his debut solo tracks nice and slow, and the work shows; tunes like “Breakdown” and “X-Factor” are outstanding additions to the zeitgeist. To ice the cake, Mayfield’s live band includes DJ Black Cat Sylvester performing miracles of mad science on an electronic instrument controller he invented called the Synth Table. Chicago jazz/funk/hip-hop troupe Sidewalk Chalk dishes out deep thoughts, and local instrumental funk outfit The Grips keep those hip-joints greasy in a rare appearance.
