Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

In recent months, Music City Roots — the weekly concert series broadcast live on Hippie Radio 94.5-FM — has stretched out a bit here and there, inviting pop and rock artists like Deer Tick, Tristen, Alanna Royale and Luella and the Sun to perform. This week, however, MCR returns to form with a lineup that embodies the term “roots” in the conventional sense. Topping the bill are Rangers of both the Steep Canyon and Westbound varieties, both of whom make old-time bluegrass with plenty of chops on display. You’ve also got country darling and sometime Pistol Annie Ashley Monroe, whose Vince Gill-produced Like a Rose won praise in 2013 for marrying traditional country arrangements with clever, modern subject matter. Rounding out the bill are experimental-folk cellist Ben Sollee (probably the least conventionally rootsy act in the bunch) and up-and-coming old-time string-band youngsters Joy Kills Sorrow.
