This or the Apocalypse w/Sirens and Sailors, Sworn In & Shai Hulud

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

Vocalists are to Shai Hulud what drummers are to Spinal Tap — though, to the best of my knowledge, none of the Shai Hulud singers have spontaneously combusted. You would think that might have resulted in big distinctions in the band’s decade-and-a-half existence, but Shai Hulud’s mile-long list of current and former members has never strayed far from their metallic hardcore blueprint. They’ve even managed to employ a half-dozen or more vocalists who all pretty much sound like the same guy. Their latest, last year’s Reach Beyond the Sun, eschews some of the proggier tendencies that show up in the band’s catalog, but it’s a welcome slice of metalcore that isn’t, you know, metalcore — a throwback to when hardcore punk first started dabbling with metal riffs rather than the Hot Topic stuff with the angular haircuts, djent-y riffs and synchronized-dance-move breakdowns. In other words, it’s metalcore for those of us who got too old for the pit.
