Tower Defense w/Friendship Commanders, Slick & Happy Little Trees

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

Bass! How low can you go? In the case of Tower Defense — the bowel-rumbling local group led by husband-wife bass-player duo Sarah and Mike Shepherd (the former of still-active-on-occasion, post-punky Nashville math-rock favorites Apollo Up) — all the way down to the pit of your stomach. Following in the footsteps of double-bass-boasting ’90s indie-rockers Dianogah, TD interweaves fat, deceptively melodic bass lines that sound like they’re talking to each other in odd meters over drummer Jeremy Frey’s creatively placed, explosive fills and steel-trap-tight grooves. Give the band’s 2013 debut Mind the Menagerie a serious spin if you haven’t already. Pop-punk leaning Nashville newcomers Friendship Commanders, Nashville-by-way-of-Knoxville glam-punks Slick and the blown-out power-pop Bombast of Happy Little Trees (led by Hotpipes drummer/multi-instrumentalist Dan Sommers), round out this rawk-replete four-band bill.
