Self w/Glossary & Montessori Dads

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

Subliminal Plastic Motives, the album that started the music-business odyssey for fabled local band Self, was released in the fall of 1995, and its mix of thundering alt-rock, jazz-inflected hip-hop, and ingenious pop stands the test of time better than many of its contemporaries. That’s reason enough to be excited for its 20th anniversary reissue via Fat Possum, which features the original band-approved master on 180-gram vinyl. The band sweetened the pot for fans with a sold-out reprise of 2012’s triumphant reunion show: The remaining members of the original group, led by chief singer/composer/producer Matt Mahaffey, will convene to tear through the album in its entirety, with plenty of other favorite cuts. Local rock ’n’ soul standard-bearers Glossary will also perform their first full-band set on home turf since an extensive tour of Europe put drummer Eric Giles on the injured list in the summer of 2013. Rounding out the bill are Montessori Dads, a new power-pop outfit featuring Self bassist (and Jimmy Kimmel Live! music director) Mac Burrus.
