Pale Pools w/Shy Guy & Echo Group
If not handled with care, nostalgia can be debilitating, a gravitational force responsible for cultural and artistic inertia. The bands on tonight’s bill draw heavily on cherished sounds of the past, but aren’t satisfied re-treading songs we’ve already heard. Pale Pools diffuse ethereal vocals through a wash of detuned guitars and synthesizers. Applying organic touches to electronic sounds, they put a critical lens on the alienation that millennial folk experience, in spite of our constant electronic connection. The ever-excellent Echo Group continues to provide singer Justin Webb with opportunities to stretch his range in an elegant blend of indie rock and classic soul, backed by a band who make even the most complex arrangements look easy. Shoegaze maestros Shy Guy remind us why the genre tag is a misnomer, injecting dreamy guitar soundscapes with garage-punk hunger and a driving rhythm section.
